Aleph Melbourne offers guidance, support and companionship for Jewish, Gay and Bisexual men through social activities, confidential telephone and personal support. The group formed in 1995 and currently has over fifty members.

What brings our members together is the common bond of being Jewish and Gay. Religious backgrounds vary from Orthodox and Traditional to Liberal and Progressive. A number are not religious at all, merely enjoying the contact with other Jewish and Gay men. Members come from all walks of life, from students to professionals.

The objectives of the group are varied.

  • Firstly, to offer peer support to Jewish Gay men. We attempt to do this by having regular social functions where members can meet each other. This may involve Shabbat dinners in members' homes, dining out in gay-friendly restaurants, outings to the movies, live-theatre, picnics.

  • Secondly, to provide a means for Jewish Gay men to meet one another in a social setting that provides an alternative to commercial Gay venues. We do this through our regular social functions and a drop-in night, where members may attend to discuss significant issues.

  • Thirdly, to identify the social and ethnic differences that may pose difficulties for Jewish Gay men and to provide a forum whereby they may meet and establish a dialogue.

Members are asked to respect the confidential nature of the group and its members at all times. If a prospective member wishes, a meeting can be arranged with the Meet and Greet committee to further explain and answer questions about the group.

If you would like further information on Aleph Melbourne or would like to attend one of our functions, please contact us - you can be assured of discretion at all times.
